Hard Seat Trains

Nearing Jinan. The hard seats are so lively -- and dirty. So for short trips, I take one sometime.

Don't they look good?

In Jan Wong's A Comrade Lost and Found: A Beijing Memoir she mentions peaches, perfect looking peaches, that quickly decay. Still I thought these looked enticing.

Jinan's Best Pasteries

Sometimes they're all gone by the time I get to this baker. Today there were 9 left of these slightly sweet delights. What makes them so good is that they aren't too sweet or too big.

Yes, More Construction

Note that safety is the bicyclist's and pedestrian's problem.

Imposing

The guard wouldn't let me go in. I wanted to see what was beyond this gate. We foreign teachers have wondered. Some think a government office; others a theater. Even my Chinese friends don't know. Or won't say.

New Neighbor

There's a new fast food restaurant (serving Chinese food) opening in the neighborhood. I don't think they can improve upon the other restaurants nearby.

Theme Day: Bright Colors

Again, I'm late on this theme day. August's theme is "Bright Colors" and China is full of them, though it's also full of lots of grays and browns.

Gung pao chicken (a.k.a. Kung pao) is one of our mainstays here. I order it bu la da (not spicy), which would be verboden in the West. They do look askance here, but since I'm foreign they do it.

Pleasant Goat Unveiled

It must be hot in that costume. In case you don't know, Pleasant Goat is "the" favorite cartoon character in China now.
